Think in layers
Night exteriors usually need a soft key for faces, a harder backlight to suggest moonlight or streetlight, and colour accents to give the background shape.
Control is everything
Flags, nets and solids matter more at night than during the day — stray light shows up immediately against a dark background. Pack a full grip kit and twice as many sandbags as you think you need.
Plan your power
Battery-powered LEDs are quiet and quick to move. For larger fixtures, check what power is available on location before the shoot day.
Start from the Cinematic Lighting Kit and add what the location needs.
